HB Production Planning - Sudirman Cup 2017

What an opportunity it was to have access to a world class event like the Sudirman Cup to observe the event operations and gather intel for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The Sudirman Cup is the first major sporting event held at the brand new Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre and the organisers were very aware of the significance this event has in the overall planning of the Badminton competition for GC2018. All functional areas that are involved with the Badminton competition in 2018 had the opportunity to make their observations and ensure the Badminton will be well organised and managed for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

As the Host Broadcaster of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, observing the Sudirman Cup allowed us to conduct a Badminton Production Planning Meeting and involve a Producer from Malaysian broadcaster, Astro. Astro are very experienced in televising Badminton and they will supply expert Badminton television crew as part of the NEP Host Broadcast team.

Razlin Hanifah, ASTRO Producer, arrived from Kuala Lumpur first thing in the morning and within hours had joined us at the Sudirman Cup.  He was very impressed with the newly built venue and is excited to bring his team to the Gold Coast in 2018.

The first session in our itinerary was spent observing the back of house areas, looking at the venue plans familiarising ourselves with the layout, pathways and personnel flows before we ventured into the main competition and field of play area. Razlin and the NEP team compared camera plans, looked at commentary positions, lighting, mixed zone, athlete entry flow and really tried to get a handle on how all areas function and interact.

The field of play housed four competition courts. This is where the real action is and if you have never seen Badminton live, then I highly recommend it. The speed and agility of the athletes is simply amazing to watch. There were times not a word was spoken for minutes as we were all lost in the whiplash battles on court.
In the end we think the shuttle always came out second best and the Sudirman Cup gave us some great insights into the successful future of the Badminton competition for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
